The video sharing site YouTube remains one of the most popular destinations on the web today. In fact, it has the 3rd most traffic out of all the websites available. This is quite coup for a couple of guys who wanted to share videos and developed this service. It has become so popular that the media giant Google actually bought out the original owners in 2006 for a reported 1.65 billions dollars!
These short movie clips or videos have gotten so popular that many people want to have their own copy in order to watch it off line. Since the format of each short clip is in the flash format or .flv, it hasn’t been easy to save this information to the hard drive and then play it back.
Now however, there is a way to make your own copy of that favorite video clip and enjoy it whenever you want. It doesn’t matter if you are online or off line. This can be played time and again without fear of being removed for violation of copyright standards.
This will require some software however, don’t worry, it’s free and in the public domain. Although there are plenty of programs that are available to download YouTube clips, probably the very best one is from Koyotesoft. This will not only capture videos from YouTube, but other sites as well, making it multi-functional. In addition, it will change the format from the flash type to one that can be played by a media player.

First go to http://www.koyotesoft.com/appli/Setup_FreeFlvConverter.exe and download the program. You can then set it up on the hard drive and it’s ready for use. The user friendly interface makes it easy to grab any file. When surfing YouTube, just have the converter open. It will do all of the work. You just have to hit the big plus button to download and then convert the video to another format. It is super easy and quick to accomplish.
The other free program is the VLC media player. It is a public domain utility that will play almost any type of media file. It can be downloaded here: http://videolan.cdn.cacheboy.net/vlc/1.0.5/win32/vlc-1.0.5-win32.exe

Run the set up and the program will play any of the YouTube clips that were saved to the hard drive and converted.
Now those favorite movies can be enjoyed at any time. And it didn’t cost you one thin dime did it?

Saving audio files from YouTube videos.
Have you ever watched a great video that was featured or posted on YouTube, and wanted to save it, or just save the audio? I’ve seen literally hundreds of great videos on YouTube, and have found an excellent, yet easy way to save the videos to my computer (or just their audio version). Before we dive in, a few tools that will be necessary are:
1. Mozilla Firefox (the latest version is always available for free at: “http://www.mozilla.com/firefox”)
2. Easy YouTube Video Downloader (a Mozilla Firefox add-on, which can be found at the official Mozilla add-on web page: “http://addons.mozilla.org”. Once the page loads, use the “search for add-ons” search bar-located at the top of the page-to search for “Easy YouTube Video Downloader”. The first result displayed will be the one needed. Click the green-colored oval button that reads “+ Add to Firefox”. A Firefox pop-up will be displayed, just click “Install Now”. Restart Firefox, then proceed.)

3. Adobe Flash Player (available completely free at: “https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:7″. When the page loads, you’ll see “Adobe Reader” and below that, you’ll see “Adobe Flash Player”, which will be the one needed. Click the green oval button that reads “+ Download Now”. This time, you’ll see a checked check box, and a yellow rectangular button that reads “Agree and Install Now”. Deselect the check box so that it is not marked, then click on “Agree and Install Now”. “Adobe DLM” (Download Manager) will be automatically added to Firefox, after selecting the “Agree and Install Now” button. After the DLM installs, it will begin downloading the flash player plug-in, and install it.)
Before we start downloading from YouTube, remember it’s always a good idea to ask the person who posted the video for permission to download a copy. Another helpful tip is to browse the Mozilla add-on library. I can’t count the number of add-ons I’ve found that help keep my computer safe, fast and efficient.
With Firefox, a nifty add-on and a simple flash player plug-in, videos and mp3’s can be easily downloaded. In Firefox, open a new tab or window, and close any other open tabs or windows. Go to: “http://www.youtube.com” and find your favorite video. When the video starts, look directly below the video’s views, and you’ll see: “Download As: FLV 3GP MP4 HD Full-HD MP3 [?]“. Pick the format you want (the first 5 being video, and the 6th being audio “mp3″) and “YoutubeDroid.com” will convert the file. All you have to do is select “Click here to download the file”. This has been a how to guide for download audio from YouTube video.
